“One of our recently qualified students has decided to go off to work in Bermuda for the next two years.”

...because it’s not
like any other business qualification. From the start of your training
you’ll realise that the CA qualification is different. You can’t
just do your training with any employer. You can only apply to those
which have been authorised by The Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Scotland (ICAS).
You’ll also find
there’s
plenty of competition for these elusive training vacancies.
If you do manage to secure a training contract, the real hard work
hasn’t
even started. You’ll be expected to combine a full days work
with additional studying when you get home. It’ll take you three
years to qualify and if you thought your university exams were tough,
wait
until you sit an ICAS exam.
The student salaries are not as high as
other graduate starting salaries because your employer will be investing
heavily in your training. Although to some extent you’ll be saving
money because your social life will suffer. And to top it all once
you’ve
qualified you’ll have to bear the brunt of accountant jokes for
the rest of your dull and boring life!
But if all this hasn’t put you off, you might be interested to hear from some current students and some qualified CAs to find out why they’re convinced it’s all been worthwhile...
